Back in September/October 2003 our friends Gloria and Fred were returning from spending winter in North Queensland. Gloria was driving their red Toyota and Fred was driving the nearly new white Toyota he had purchased at the Government Car Auction in Cairns
They were making good time and having stopped for morning tea at Rolleston were expecting to be in Roma for lunch. Having travelled steadily down the Carnarvon Highway at 110 kilometres per hour they slowed a little as they came upon a caravan. They now were 80 km from Injune.
Just then the back tyre blew out and the steering seemed to be taken completely out of Gloria’s hands. Her Toyota veered across the road, down the embankment into the Gully and up the other side. Although the steering was totally out of her control a complete peace came over Gloria. She knew she was going to crash, that the car would be a write off and yet at the same time she knew she was going to come out of it alive and unharmed.
Her car was still doing about ninety km when the driver’s side front tyre struck a rock and the car catapulted through a second gully and into a tree head on. Slewing sideways if finally stopped as it slammed against another tree. With the driver’s door jammed against the tree Gloria scrambled over the console and exited the car by the passenger door.
While all this was happening Fred had looked in his rear vision mirror and all he could see was a cloud of dust. When he arrived back he ran down the steep incline and seeing the car’s condition he was convinced Gloria couldn’t have survived such a crash. Likewise the tow truck driver later remarked “I didn’t expect you to be alive.” Added to that, the policeman exclaimed when he saw the condition of the car “You are lucky to be alive!” It was nothing to do with luck!
Later when telling me this story she asked, “Were you praying for me?” I often prayed for safety when she was off on her trips north but whether or not I did on that actual day I could not say. However I am in no doubt that it was an Angel who took the steering wheel out of her hands and guided her to safety. The old Negro spiritual comes to mind, “All night, all day, angels watching over me my Lord……” Psalm 91:11 says, ‘For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways’
