Choices

Peters last photo1_0001

Today, apart from being the first day of spring is also quite miserable. Its drizzling with rain and the temperature is dropping too. After nearly a week of sunny days where it got to 21deg on a couple of occasions we were all buoyed with the hope of spring. Last week it seemed everyone I met was cheerfully reminding me that spring was around the corner.
Why is it that a day when the weather is quite dismal can affect us all so much? Doug just reminded me that this time last year we were looking forward to going to London. This brought a smile to my face as I remembered the expectations we had that were all fulfilled in abundance. Then I looked down to the last picture taken of our precious little Peter on my desk, a picture of him laughing. We had all been to say goodbye to him as he lay almost lifeless, slipping away from us. Doug and I were back home when we received a call from Meredith I could hear Peter in the background. He had sat up in bed and ordered rainbow ice cream. He was cheerfully chattering away and full of life. He kept this up for some hours playing games in the night with Bec, (one of the nurses who had been with him from the beginning) before he slipped away the next morning.
The thought came to me that like most other areas of our lives it’s all about choices. We can choose to be cheerful and not let the weather affect us or we can be miserable. It’s our choice! It’s really nothing to do with the weather. Peter was so full of life and taught us so many lessons on his short journey and it seems he still is.
